Born on this day in 1887, Georgia O'Keeffe was a seminal figure of American Modernism, renowned for her representations of the natural landscape and iconic canvases featuring sun-blanched bones, desert flowers, and rolling canyons.

O'Keeffe's "Black Iris" (1926), now on view now in "The City of Ladies" installation, part of "Judy Chicago: Herstory," is considered one of the artist's early masterpieces. O’Keeffe’s flower paintings were particularly inspirational for @judy.chicago, who understood this body of work as an expression of femininity and bodily experience. Chicago noticed that O’Keeffe’s paintings were often constructed around a “central core,” a compositional strategy that Chicago and many other feminist artists of the 1970s adopted in their own work.
