Photo by Drew Rush @drewtrush | I was on assignment in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, looking for mountain lions with my friend and colleague Dan Stahler. Dan is in charge of mountain lion research at Yellowstone National Park, and we were looking for locations that had massive, beautiful landscapes to set up camera traps that we could leave out in the field.

One of the first videos he showed me was of a cat walking by this location. A huge elk rack lay right next to the trail. I really couldn’t believe what I saw. The only reason this rack wasn’t hanging on someone’s wall was because it was in Yellowstone, where it’s illegal to take trophies like this out of the park. Whether this elk died from predation or after a long hard winter we’ll never know, but I knew as soon as I saw it that it was one of the most unique locations I had ever come across. Although my instructions were to look for images that showed the grand landscape of Yellowstone with a cat in it, eventually I couldn’t stand it and placed one of my cameras here without telling my editor. Fourteen months later and I don’t know how many miles hiked to check this camera, we got this shot. It’s one out of a sequence of four images, this being the only really good one.

Camera traps are an exercise in patience, perseverance, and, most important, visualization. You have to be able to see in your mind’s eye where each animal will be in your frame before it happens. It’s my favorite thing to do, chasing these cats through the mountains, and this is one of my favorite images doing it. Follow along with @drewtrush to see more images from the wild side.
