The “pindan” orange-red soil, iron oxide stained, is a stark contrast to the surrounding tropical savanna, part of the largest and most pristine in the world. Migratory shorebirds undertake one of the longest migrations of any species to feed on the plentiful mudflats at Yawuru sea country (Roebuck Bay). This unique ecosystem currently faces new threats of fracking and a potential floating liquefied natural gas facility that would subject the region to seismic blasting, pipe laying, and gas drilling.
