Indigenous Australians have lived and thrived here for thousands of generations, and marine life is prolific. Off the Murujuga (Dampier Peninsula), corals, seagrass, and sponge gardens host an array of fish; dugongs, turtles, dolphins, and whales abound. In June, humpback whales arrive and give birth in the calm protected waters just off the coast. At Walmadany (James Price Point), the rocky terrain has one of the richest sets of dinosaur footprints on the planet, including one of the largest, etched into a sandstone formation that’s between 127 million and 140 million years old. The area was granted National Heritage status. The “pindan” orange-red soil, iron oxide stained, is a stark contrast to the surrounding tropical savanna, part of the largest and most pristine in the world. Migratory shorebirds undertake one of the longest migrations of any species to feed on the plentiful mudflats at Yawuru sea country (Roebuck Bay). This unique ecosystem currently faces new threats of fracking and a potential floating liquefied natural gas facility that would subject the region to seismic blasting, pipe laying, and gas drilling.
