We occupied the House floor yesterday after repeatedly being silenced from talking about the crisis of mass shootings. We stood in solidarity with the thousands of Tennesseans gathered outside calling on us to take urgent action. We could not go about business as normal as students, parents, and community members pleaded for common sense gun laws following Monday’s mass shooting at Nashville’s Covenant elementary school. To just sit there and go about the routine agenda would be abdicating our responsibility as legislators. In light of our actions in solidarity with those protesting, the House Speaker is threatening to permanently expel us from the legislature and correlating yesterday’s peaceful demonstrations to end gun violence with “violent insurrection.” He and his leadership group are more concerned with “decorum” than the deaths of nine-year-olds by militarized guns that have no place in our communities.
