10 years ago, we activated the charity effort to assist the communities devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011 under the title “New Day.” Thanks to people like Mr. François Pinault, the owner of Christie’s, and Mr. Larry Gagosian, who kindly signed on to support the effort, its social impact was greatly magnified. The artists we had approached for support also contributed numerous works with tremendous generosity. Those works were auctioned at Christie’s, allowing us to make an enormous impact; the funds raised were donated to three organizations: Japan Foundation, GlobalGiving, and International Medical Corps. Japan Foundation, which received the largest amount, about half of the money raised, has since established the New Day Charity Fund and, starting with the Hajimari Art Center in Inawashiro, Fukushima, which opened in 2012, they have established six cultural and community spaces to help the region’s recovery. I understand that they continue to contribute to the recovery of the dispersed communities.
