Photo by @carltonward / This is a Florida scrub jay that landed quite close to me at Archbold Biological Station. Existing nowhere else on Earth, the Florida scrub jay is threatened by destruction and fragmentation of its native oak scrub habitat. Jay populations have declined more than 90 percent in the past century, and because of fragmentation, most jay populations are becoming inbred. The story of the Florida scrub jay is a call for help, begging us to recognize the need to protect wildlife habitat corridors to keep the surviving jay populations connected and prevent them from declining further. A team of scientists are working to mitigate the problem through a technique called genetic rescue, which involves translocating families of jays from larger, more genetically diverse populations to smaller, genetically impoverished populations. But the best long-term hope is conserving and restoring Florida scrub habitat. If we act soon, we can connect the habitat on which they depend. The @pathofthepanther project with @insidenatgeo is working to inspire the protection of the Florida Wildlife Corridor.
