#BeaufordDelaney met #JamesBaldwin, the now-renowned writer and civil rights activist, while both men were working in New York during the #HarlemRenaissance. Their mutual creative influence spanned their friendship of thirty-eight years. In this portrait, one of the earliest paintings that Delaney made of Baldwin, he uses vivid colors and a closely cropped view of Baldwin’s face to suggest the vibrant personality and intensity of his subject.  See this work in our new exhibition "Painting Identity." #BlackHistoryMonth
