⚡ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: MELVIN EDWARDS⚡

The first African-American sculptor to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1970, Melvin Edwards (b. 1937, Houston, TX) uses sculpture to test the boundary between abstraction and figuration. On the Third Floor of “Grief and Grievance,” Edwards presents "Texicali" (1965) along with nine other works from his series, "Lynch Fragments"—small-scale reliefs that he began in 1963. Comprised of chains, hooks, gears, and other steel objects welded together, "Lynch Fragments" imply a person at once in and freed from bondage. Rather than contribute to a proliferation of imagery of violence against Black people, these abstract steel sculptures evoke that violence through process, iconography, and display.
