"Ellen Gallagher’s 'DeLuxe' registers loss—the loss of Black identity, the marginalization of Black culture—even as it dances around the demotic idiom of old-style magazines."
—Sebastian Smee
In a recent piece for “Washington Post,” Sebastian Smee writes at length about Ellen Gallagher’s “Deluxe.” Part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the work consists of sixty prints involving materials from velvet to googly eyeballs. Each print is based on pages from old magazines aimed at African American readers: “Sepia,” “Our World” and “Ebony.” Read more about the work via the link in our bio.
