"Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America" opens today at New Museum, New York. Originally conceived by curator Okwui Enwezor (1963–2019), this intergenerational exhibition brings together thirty-seven artists working in a variety of mediums who have addressed the concept of mourning, commemoration, and loss as a direct response to the national emergency of racist violence experienced by Black communities across America. Work by artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ellen Gallagher, and Theaster Gates is included.
Tomorrow at 5pm EST, join Artforum and Sotheby’s for a conversation between professor Malik Gaines, curators Naomi Beckwith and Massimiliano Gioni, and artists Gates and Julie Mehretu about the exhibition. Follow the link in our bio register for the talk.
