Some of the most fearless depictions of male same-sex desire in the years before 1967 can be seen in the work of Francis Bacon. As a teenager his parents threw him out of their home for trying on his mother’s underwear. He soon gravitated to London, where he began his visceral exploration of the human figure and the emotional exposure of the human condition.

Bodies are often highly distorted in Bacon’s paintings. In this work, for example, parts of the head and lower body are almost illegible. Bacon has used texture and colours to describe the flesh, bone and blood of the head. The dribbles and splatters of paint are reminiscent of leaking bodily fluids, bringing attention to the physical material of the human body. When the painting was first shown in 1963, one critic wrote that: ‘the humanity of us all is flayed to the naked flesh of this amorphous figure...'
