Although she is unnamed in the title, we know that the woman in this painting is Fanella Lovell, an artist’s model that John painted several times. Her direct gaze challenges the expectations of the passive female nude. By using limited colour and minimal setting, John draws our attention to the sitter’s naked body. The image is strikingly honest - the female form is not idealised or presented purely as sensual. John is perhaps best known as August Rodin’s lover, but she had relationships with both men and women in her lifetime. In a profession still largely dominated by men, she struggled for recognition as an artist. Today, she is widely recognised for her intimate portraits.
