In our reinstalled American Art galleries, the addition of more works by Black American artists and craftspeople offers a broader view of early American identity and attempts to address longstanding inequities in art historical narratives. Hanging near a portrait of George Washington is the portrait of another revolutionary, Angela Davis, by AfriCOBRA artist Wadsworth Jarrell. This pairing is one of the ways that the reinstallation makes space to consider how our understanding of U.S. history has evolved in the 289 years since the birth of our first president.
