Video by @Joel Sartore / Found in the western United States, the giant garter snake can reach up to 64 inches in length. This species is most often spotted living in rice fields, as most of the snake’s natural habitat has been lost. Since habitat is often open and treeless, these snakes are vulnerable to airborne predators, which is why they will immediately drop into the water and disappear when they sense they have been spotted.
