David Chancellor (@chancellordavid) captured a wildlife veterinarian approach an elephant cow caught in mud at the edge of a dam, in the Narupa Community Conservancy, in northern Kenya. It was freed with the assistance of a tractor from @loisaba_conservancy. She was desperate to be reunited with her herd. Without the support of the rangers and community, this would be a very different tale. Prior to the work of @nrt_kenya in this area and across Kenya, this elephant would possibly not have survived; the ivory would have been removed and fed into the illegal ivory market, the calf orphaned. It cost roughly $500 to preserve the life of this magnificent elephant. This dam is now a decade old and supports increasingly diverse wildlife: Grevy’s zebras, elephants, giraffe, as well as livestock. The increased use is causing a buildup of silt, which is beginning to trap wildlife. The plan, once funds have been raised, is to reinstate the dam for another decade of use.
