The giraffe had likely succumbed to old age, and before long, the usual feathered assemblage had formed around its carcass. Late to dine and quite outnumbered, the black-backed jackal found itself jostling for a spot at the feast. The process of disposal is a fierce and often grisly one, but there is beauty and balance here too. Like an ecosystem in miniature, the giraffe’s carcass will nourish an astonishing variety of creatures, and the circle of life will continue.
