In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’ll be spotlighting incredible Black female pioneers and entrepreneurs all month long. Today we’re sharing the story of Madam C.J. Walker, the first woman to become a self-made millionaire in America through her innovative hair care products.

Madam C.J. Walker pioneered African American inclusion in the beauty world and paved the way for business owners across every industry. After experiencing hair loss due to a scalp condition, Walker began her entrepreneurial journey by exploring different remedies, which led to the creation of her famous products, like her custom hair oil and vegetable shampoo, and the launch of the Walker System, which included hair tips (like the use of pomades) for Black women.

As the Madam C.J. Walker Company grew, Walker’s strategy did, too. By the 1910s, she opened a factory, a beauty school, and employed African American women who went door-to-door selling products as “Walker Agents.” She also regularly funded scholarships for historically Black colleges and donated to the NAACP and other civil rights organizations. Today, her indelible mark on the beauty industry remains and her inspiring entrepreneurship and philanthropic work continue to help move the world forward towards racial equality.
