This past rainy weekend, Heal the Bay staff conducted water quality testing at 8 major storm drain outfalls entering the ocean between Topanga, Malibu, and Venice. We observed plenty of trash, oil, and soap flowing into the ocean. And after a trip to our lab, we found that all of the water samples contained bacteria indicative of a public health risk, and exceeded thresholds for safe recreation. Stormwater runoff is a major source of pollution for LA waterways. We recommend staying out of the ocean for at least 3 days after a big rain.
On the bright side, we were heartened to spontaneously find community members doing physically distanced Storm Response cleanups at 3 of the water collection sites! Way to go Angelenos!
