Photo by @acacia.johnson / On President Trump's last full day in office, his administration finalized leases for drilling rights in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The coastal plain, where the drilling would take place, is the calving grounds of the porcupine caribou herd that has sustained the region's Indigenous people for thousands of years. The next day, on President Biden's first day in office, he ordered a temporary moratorium on all oil and gas leasing activities in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge—a move celebrated by environmental advocates, and in particular, the Gwich'in people.
"In the Arctic, our peoples are being heavily impacted by a climate crisis due to fossil fuel extraction, which we cannot afford to continue," said Jody Potts, a member of the Han Gwich'in tribe. "Gwich'in people will not compromise and we will defend our way of life for future generations until this land is permanently protected."
