As part of President Biden's first-day actions, he's directed the Department of Interior to protect America's natural treasures by placing a temporary moratorium on all oil and natural gas leasing activities in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It overturn an action by the Trump Administration, which had allowed oil-lease sales in its last days, despite a majority of Americans opposing oil development in the refuge. As a wildlife photographer, I believe a refuge is no place for an oilfield. I photographed this beautiful grizzly along the Canning River in the Arctic Refuge. The bear stood up on its hind legs to get a better look at me. To keep its balance, it's using its paws as if waving. (I take this little wave as a thank you.) The announcement of the temporary moratorium is a sign of hope in the long road ahead for permanent protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
