Despite their enormous size, these basking sharks can be surprisingly skittish, especially if you’re freediving (the splash created by your fins can spook them). I found the best strategy was to anticipate their arrival and dive down well before they approached. My expert guides Shane and Isla gave critical tips and tricks on predicting their path. These included fast (but quiet!) swimming with your head above the water, watching the orientation of the dorsal fin, as well as analyzing the streaky tide lines that the sharks follow.
