For the final time on Earth, @NASAWebb has successfully unfolded and tensioned its sunshield, just like it will in space!
The size of a tennis court, this kite-shaped structure will always block heat from the Sun. The side of the sunshield facing the Sun will be a blistering 230 degrees F, while the other side will be a frigid -394 degrees F! This helps ensure that the telescope's sensitive mirrors & optics will be kept super cold in order to see in infrared light.
During testing, engineers simulated a zero-gravity environment using a complex system of pulleys and cables. Read more at the link in our bio.
