Happy 25th birthday, SOHO! 🎉

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory — a joint @europeanspaceagency/@NASA mission — launched on Dec. 2, 1995, carrying 12 instruments to take a comprehensive look at the Sun. After a quarter-century in orbit, its measurements have helped illuminate everything from the inner workings of the Sun’s core to how solar storms are launched into space.

This video shows a time-lapse of data from SOHO’s coronagraph instrument, which uses a solid disk to block out the Sun’s bright face, revealing the faint outer atmosphere, called the corona. Such images allow scientists to study explosions of solar material that can affect spacecraft, astronauts, and even technology on Earth.
