Total solar eclipses let us see the Sun in a new light. ☀️

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon blocks out the Sun’s face, revealing its relatively faint outer atmosphere, the corona. This view of the corona — and the sudden change in conditions on Earth — mean that such eclipses are a unique chance for scientists to study the Sun and Earth in uncommon ways.

These images of the Sun’s corona were taken during the total solar eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017, by a Goddard-led team of scientists. Their novel detector captured multiple wavelengths of polarized light simultaneously, showing how such instruments can be effective for studying the Sun.

Parts of Chile and Argentina will experience a total solar eclipse on Dec. 14, 2020. NASA will share live images of the eclipse starting at 9:40 a.m. EST on Dec. 14, along with a Spanish-language show beginning at 10:30 a.m. EST. Details ➡️ nasa.gov/live
