I saw her first on film in ALL THAT JAZZ , then had the pleasure of witnessing her electric performance as Roxie on opening night of the revival of CHICAGO. I had no idea just a few years later she would pay me the honor a lifetime. When an actor takes over a role in a musical, we learn and rehearse separately from the current cast until we are prepared to step into the spotlight. In my case, I was taking over the role of Velma from TONY winner Bebe Neuwirth, in the smash hit. In order to not overwork the cast doing eight shows a week, we work with dance captains who prepare us for the ultimate fine tuning with the director and TONY Winner, #walterbobbie , Musical Director @robbowman88 and Ann, who won the TONY for Choreography for the show. The four of us spent a few hours in a Midtown rehearsal studio, with floor-to-ceiling mirrors that I remember reflected caverns of buildings in Times Square that “set the stage’ in a surreal way. CHICAGO ends with the dueling divas Velma and Roxie,brilliantly portrayed at that point by @charswebnyc, also Broadway royalty so it was imperative that my polish match her level for the 11 o’clock number MY OWN BEST FRIEND into the closing HOT HONEY RAG. Ann did us the favor of "standing in” as Roxie, the role that made her famous. She casually marked it as we began, then began to lean into it as the number progressed and our slow burn gained intensity until it became a true duet with us both playing it full out. For that moment in time, I had the experience of actually performing along side the great Ann Reinking and it was a magical moment that I will never forget. While it was probably just another rehearsal for her, she gave me the respect of her full energy in that number and she also gave me confidence to give my fullest each time I stepped on that stage at the Schubert. I hope she and Bob and Gwen are doing a soft shoe in the ghost light keeping the stage warm for the rest of us lucky enough to have seen them shine.」12月15日 13時29分
