A puppy whose owner saved him from the jaws of an alligator in Estero, Florida, was recently made a member of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dogs program.

Gunner, a four-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, was rescued from an alligator attack when his owner Richard Wilbanks jumped into a pond to save him.

Video of the incident shows Wilbanks pulling an alligator’s jaws apart, freeing Gunner.
Gunner was this week officially deputized as a member of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dogs program.

“Do you swear to uphold the constitutional law for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office? This is a big day, OK. You are going to be a detective now,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said to Gunner while pinning a badge on his harness.

The Deputy Dogs Pets on Patrol initiative “encourages pet owners to pay closer attention to suspicious activity while out with their pets and report concerns to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office,” the sheriff’s office says.
