The more I feel I am being pushed into a mould, the more I feel like going in the opposite direction.' Born in Beirut to a Palestinian family, Mona Hatoum studied graphic design at the Beirut College for Women before settling in England in 1975. Here she studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, followed by the Slade School of Fine Art. In the late 1980s she began to make installations and sculptures in a wide range of materials, including metal, light, glass, and bodily material such as hair. Her works often use the grid or geometric forms to reference to systems of control within society. She has made a number of works using household objects which are scaled up or changed to make them familiar but uncanny. Through the juxtaposition of opposites, the artist engages us in conflicting emotions of desire and revulsion, fear and fascination. This work, 'Interior/Exterior' presents a series of items that make subtle references to the artist’s biography, arranged in a cell-like room. These include a hair-embroidered pillow depicting flight routes between cities Hatoum regularly visits, a bag constructed from a cut-out print of a world map, and a birdcage housing a hairball.
