Wall began photographing the low tide at the Spanish Banks beaches on English Bay in Vancouver, Canada, during an unexpected interlude in his hometown this summer. In “Low tide,” the sinuous tufts of seaweed in the foreground are partially above the water, where their looping forms are more crisply defined, their greens deeper, and are partially submerged in the bay, where their edges are softer and almost painterly. Wall’s photograph records the endlessly varied and shifting patterns created in the seaweed by the ebb and flow of the tide, which become static—as if fixed in a photograph—once the water has retreated.
