The UK and Ireland have the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world. This is due to differences in the support given to breastfeeding mothers and how we view and value breastfeeding. Most women in the UK want to breastfeed their babies but so many are experiencing problems and not getting the right support. Up to 90% of women who stop breastfeeding in the first six weeks aren't ready to do so and this can leave them feeling angry, guilty and worried about their baby and is a risk factor for postnatal depression. We know that good support helps women but funding for a lot of services has been cut, meaning women aren't getting the support they need. Breastfeeding might be natural but it is still a skill that needs support whilst women get to know their baby. It has been particularly difficult during COVID-19 as many women found they were without face to face support. Some managed to access support online and really valued this but others struggled and ended up stopping breastfeeding before they were ready. Others worried about asking for support because they were worried about putting pressure on the health service. Almost 90% of those who stopped breastfeeding during lockdown said it was due to a lack of face to face support. Because we have such low breastfeeding rates in this country we still aren't used to seeing it a lot, which means that some people still don't accept it. People don't understand that babies need to breastfeed frequently and this includes when out of the house. It's normal - and just a baby eating in public, just like many adults do! Women are protected by law to breastfeed their baby wherever they want. You are not allowed to tell a woman to stop feeding or move elsewhere.」11月15日 21時12分
