Hosteen Nez Basa, a Navajo woman from New Mexico, made this blanket for her son, a soldier serving in Europe during World War I. Convinced that her son would die at the front, Ms. Basa made the blanket to be used for his burial. When her son returned home alive, she donated the blanket to benefit the local Red Cross to raffle off, raising close to $1,500 for war relief.
