This 👩‍🎨 🎨 is for 👩‍🔬 🧪 ! Even though today’s cameras are able to document the fine details of plants and trees, science still needs other art forms to inspire us and provide a complete perspective. For example, botanical artist Nirupa Rao can capture a towering, 140-foot-tall tree in a single watercolor painting, something a camera just can't do. Besides aiming for scientific precision in her work, she wants to showcase the quirks and characteristics of her non-human but very much alive subjects. “A lot of people just tend to see plants as background scenery, assuming that their immobility makes them uninteresting,” says Rao. “And I couldn't help but wonder: What if I could tell their stories, showcase their complexity? Perhaps we'd all start to think of plants a little differently.” This watercolor illustrates the strange sundews of India's Western Ghats — one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet — as they lure insects using the sweet and sticky glands on their leaves.
