Let’s talk 🌳🌳🌳! After years of extreme rains and a devastating landslide in 2017, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr (@yvonneakisawyerr) could see clearly that climate change was wrecking her home of Freetown, Sierra Leone. So she ran for mayor — and won! Now, her administration has a big goal: Plant one million trees in the next two years — and invite everyone to join in. Over the past year, the city has nursed 15 (!) different species of trees and is now undergoing the process of planting them outside of homes, schools, offices, public spaces and more! The goal of all this new greenery? To reduce the risk of future landslides and flooding, reintroduce biodiversity to the area, and also help trap excess carbon in the air.
