"And a Woman Mans a Cannon"⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Margaret Cochran Corbin—the first woman buried with full military honors at West Point—was presented by #JacobLawrence as a commanding heroine in this panel from his series "Struggle: From the History of the American People," highlighting his interest in the role of women in American history.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Corbin fought with her cannoneer husband in the Battle of Fort Washington in what is now Upper Manhattan. ⁣Taking her husband’s place at the cannon, she fired bravely until wounded and captured. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Corbin later joined what was called the “Invalid Regiment” at West Point. She struggled as a disabled veteran, living most of her life in poverty.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Final week! Experience Lawrence’s multi-paneled series in “Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle” on view through November 1.⁣⁣⁣⁣

[Image description: A curly haired woman stands before a bright blue canon in a long yellow dress with a revolver tucked in at her waist. By her feet, her slain husband lies covered in brown cloth, his figure recognizable by a lone arm that peeks out from under. In front of her, a line of soldiers crouch down and bear bayonets, poised to continue their fight.]
