📣 📣 If you've been hankering for some #goodnews, boy do we have it—one of Jacob Lawrence's missing panels from his "Struggle" series has been found!
Here’s the story: A local New Yorker had seen a #JacobLawrence painting in the home of her neighbors for years. After visiting "Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle" at The Met, she had a hunch that their painting was part of the series and encouraged the owners to contact the Museum—a true testament to the power of community!
“The painting has been hanging in my living room for 60 years untouched,” said one of the owners, a longtime lover of Lawrence's work. "I felt I owed it both to the artist and The Met to allow them to show the painting."
Thought missing for decades, panel 16 depicts Shays' Rebellion, the uprising of struggling farmers in Massachusetts led by Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Shays. It was titled by Lawrence: "There are combustibles in every State, which a spark might set fire to. —Washington, 26 December 1786."
Starting tomorrow, panel 16 will be on view for the final two weeks of the exhibition at The Met before joining the touring show, organized by the @peabodyessex, for presentations in Birmingham, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., through next fall.
