Photo by @tamaramerino_photography / Chile's Atacama Desert, the most arid desert in the world, is host to a beautiful natural phenomenon known as the desierto florido (flowering desert). About 200 species, many of them endemic, sprout only during this particular event, covering the desert in life and color. Most seeds are able to lie dormant for many years under the soil until favorable conditions allow them to germinate and bloom.

Here, twin sisters walk carefully on a carpet of flowers that takes over the land for some days. The flowering desert is generally associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which produces high rainfall and an average ambient temperature suitable for the germination of seeds and bulbs.
