Photo by @joshuacogan / Light streams through old-growth forest of the Tongass in the McKenzie Inlet on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. The Tongass is the largest remaining old-growth forest in the United States at just over 17 million acres of protected wild lands. Over the past few years, the Trump Administration has sought to remove protections against logging in the Tongass, opening up wide swaths of this temperate rainforest to clear-cut logging. The administration and the USDA recently completed plans that would allow nine million of the 17 million acres to be opened for old-growth logging, which will not only harm the ecology of the region, but also potentially release enormous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.
