The Golden Pavilion, a World Heritage Site, is one of Kyoto's most iconic buildings. A couple of weeks ago, I read that the current lack of tourists caused by Japan's strict COVID travel restrictions had presented an opportunity for major restorations. While the gold-leaf-covered building itself remains under wraps, a replica image of the scene on a sunny Autumn day has been installed beside the pond. Photography is by its definition a slice of time. For this 600-year-old building, this is a significant but relatively brief moment and soon people will be back to marvel at its beauty.

(*current government speculation is Japan will start opening to restricted inbound tourist travel from April 2021 in the process of normalization proceeding the Tokyo Olympics.)
