(English follows Japanese) 何年か前に読んだインタビューでは、無気力な若者がぬるま湯で水浴びしていることを「入浴猿」に喩えていた。長野県の地獄谷は、冬の間、野生の猿が温泉に浸かっている場所である。入り口には「サルが快適に過ごせる温度に保たれています」と書かれた看板がある。私は衝撃を受けた。これは自然の生息地ではない。1970年代に数匹のサルがホテルの温泉に入ったことをきっかけに、この公園はサルを誘引するためのアトラクションとして作られたのだという。私たちは社会的条件付けによって無意識のうちにどのような信念や行動を訓練されているのだろうか。10年以上に渡って東京のナイトライフカルチャーを撮り続けてきた。保安的な服装規定から解放された輝かしいユース、高校卒業および入社までの貴重な短い期間、ファッションやヘアスタイルを通して表現の自由とアイデンティティを可能にする。

Years ago, I read an interview that used 'a bathing ape' as a metaphor for a generation of apathetic youth, comfortably bathing in water lukewarm water. This concept played on my mind until I finally got to visit Jigokudani in Nagano Prefecture, the place where the wild monkeys bath in the hot springs during the winter. At the entrance, a sign notified visitors that the water temperature is kept at a level comfortable for the monkeys. I was shocked. This is not a natural habitat. It turns out that after a few monkeys had entered hotel hot spring baths in the 1970s, this park was created as an attraction with the monkeys encouraged into this behavior. This prompted me to consider the metaphor itself, what beliefs and behaviors are we subconsciously trained into through social conditioning? I contradict the idea of apathetic youth with an image of the exuberant Tokyo youth scene I have been part of and photographed for over a decade. There's a small window of freedom in the years between high school uniforms and acceptable workplace wear that allows freedom of expression and identity through fashion and hairstyles.
