Check out these charismatic chess pieces ♟
These are the Lewis Chessmen – skilfully carved chess pieces made in Scandinavia in the late 12th century, and found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland in around 1831. It’s thought they belonged to a merchant travelling from Norway to Ireland, and various stories have evolved to explain why they may have been concealed there.
Museum Trustee Sir Paul Ruddock has a personal connection to these charming objects. He received a replica set from the Museum for his 8th birthday, which he learned to play the game on, and he still has the entire set! Sir Paul says ‘without a doubt, this is what started me on a life-long love of medieval works of art which continues to this day’.
