Centering on the power of divine feminine energy, Tantra inspired the dramatic rise of goddess worship in medieval India. Tantric goddesses challenged traditional models of womanhood as passive and docile in their intertwining of violent and erotic power.
The seductive but dangerous Yoginis were shapeshifting goddesses who could transform into women, birds, tigers or jackals, with powers from flight and immortality to control over others – shown here in this photo of a 10th-century temple in eastern India.
Our #TantraExhibition includes an immersive recreation of a circular Yogini temple, designed to be roofless so that at night Yoginis could fly down into it – swipe to see the space 👉
