Photography is all about light, so it’s essential to understand it! The daily light cycle is divided into five different phases, each one of which depends on the elevation of the sun: daytime, golden hour, blue hour, twilight, and nighttime. Twilight happens before sunrise and after sunset, when the sun is below the horizon but the light is visible in the upper atmosphere. It is divided into civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight, depending on the order of brightness. Golden hour and blue hour overlap during civil twilight. Blue hour happens when the sun is -6° to -4° below the horizon, while golden hour happens when the sun is -4° to 6° below the horizon. As the names suggest, golden hour is characterized by warm colors, while blue hour is characterized by cold colors. There are plenty of apps on the market that will tell you exactly what time the sun will be in a particular position, so you can plan your shooting accordingly.
