The confectioner has come a long way from its original location nestled in the forest of Ena in Gifu Prefecture. It’s known for its poundcake, confitures, and other confections made with a generous amount of forest ingredients. Its mascots are two squirrels: head chef “Chest” and sous-chef “Nuts.” Especially popular is the “Le petit bois 150” (3,000 yen), a box of cookies that is like a treasure box of the forest’s bounty. The cookies, which contain natural ingredients like acorn flour, Japanese hawthorne, and raspberries, have a distinct bitterness, mild sweetness, and crumble-in-your-mouth texture.
