Sumi (Japanese black ink )
2枚目は墨、繋いでゆくこと。

In honor of continuation, I worked my second Unbroken Line with Kobaien’s sumi ink I acquired in Japan in February. Established in 1577, Kobaien 古梅園 ( old plum garden ) is the oldest traditional sumi ink maker in Nara.

My mother used to write letters with Kobaien’s calligraphy ink. After 2011 Great Earthquake and Tsunami hit Japan, I paid my tribute with painting around hundreds of cherry blossom petals ( #YuriShimojoMementoMori 2013 ) with old ink stick I found in her calligraphy set.

Though I have never received formal calligraphy nor painting trainings, I always have sensuously enjoyed their quality of ink because it speaks to me deeply to connect with the ancients.

#途切れない一本の線 ２枚目は、古梅園の墨で描きました。古梅園は、安土桃山時代創業、日本最古の奈良墨の老舗です。

母はよく古梅園のお花墨を磨って手紙を書いていました。東日本大震災の後、硯箱の中に残っていた母の使いかけの墨で、慰霊者へ追悼の意を込めて何百枚もの桜の花びらの周りを淡墨で包むように描きました。（#下條ユリメメントモリ 2013 ）

書道や日本画を正式に学んだことのないわたしは、墨もお道具の扱い方もとことん独学、自分勝手流です。古梅園の墨は、なんとも言えない不思議な感覚で、いにしえとの繋がりをもたらせてくれるのです。
