The two dancers grew up partaking in Utah’s powwow circuit, and they would often see each other performing at the same events. Though the two competed in different categories—Stevens is a grass dancer, Snyder is a fancy dancer—Stevens says, “we kind of had an eye for each other.” They said they were instantly drawn to each other’s shared love of dancing and regalia-making. “Growing up within powwows, we were raised in that creative environment of making your own regalia, talking to people within the community that makes certain things, and always just exchanging knowledge,” says Stevens.  They started out dancing in separate categories, but they felt drawn towards competing together, which presented a new challenge for them to approach regalia design differently. “Because our styles are so different, we had to find a way to dance together,” says Snyder. “And for us being two men, it was surprisingly difficult. You don’t grow up going to dances and learning to dance with another same-sex partner. We had to learn how to lead and how to take direction.” Stevens and Snyder have now competed in sweetheart categories everywhere from the Seminole Tribal Fair in Hollywood, Florida to the San Manuel Powwow in San Bernardino, California.
