However, they have not been seen on Padar since the 1970s, as a result of the poaching of deer, the reptile’s primary source of prey. These predators are at the top of their food chain, relying on strength and power to take down prey. A single bite delivers saliva loaded with bacteria and venom capable of killing prey within a few days. After the animal dies, the Komodo uses its powerful sense of smell to locate the body. Today, this species is threatened by limited prey availability, loss of habitat, and hunting. The establishment of Komodo National Park and anti-poaching laws have helped protect the dragons, although illegal activity still takes place.
