Photos by @nicholesobecki The women in these portraits are all mothers whose children have been caught up in a human trafficking ring, which operates across Somaliland and preys on families that have been displaced by drought, like those here at a camp for the displaced in Burao. Smugglers circulate among vulnerable young people, and those who follow them are thrown into holding camps in Libya, held hostage, and tortured to convince families to pay ransoms of between $5,000 and $17,000—or else. It’s an overlooked and brutal aspect of how the climate crisis is playing out in the Horn of Africa.
