Associated with royalty, lions in ancient Egypt were believed to be powerful forces and were often invoked to protect the gods and their temples. ⬆️ This lion may have once guarded a temple entrance as part of a pair.
🎨 Egyptian. Reclining lion, Ptolemaic or Roman Period (332 B.C.–A.D. 364). Limestone. Provenance: Purchased by the Museum in 1912 from the Egyptian government.
[Image descriptions: The face of a limestone statue of a male lion who appears to be softly smiling. The same limestone statue of a male lion pictured in full view. The lion appears to be at rest and his head is angled to face the viewer before him.]
