One of the settings for the 2007 American movie "The Kite Runner," Ostang Boi is known for brewing various kinds of tea not only from across the country but also elsewhere in the world, including fruit tea from Germany and Iran and Turkish black tea. For more than 2,000 years, Kashgar has been an epicenter of trade and cultural exchange, strategically located along the Silk Road. Before much of its destruction, Kashgar’s Old City was called the “best-preserved example of a traditional Islamic city to be found anywhere in central Asia,” according to architect and historian George Michell. When I was there, in 2009, large sections of the old city were being bulldozed. Today, though just a small section of the original city remains, the vital spirit of the Uyghur people who inhabit the area can be seen.
