I am a mother, a refugee who helps other refugees resettle in the U.S. with @RESCUEorg (pictured here in DC with my colleagues), and a Black woman. All of my childhood was spent in displacement. That little girl, she would look at education as the only way to escape. I worked hard, I got my law degree. I flew more than 35+ hours to the United States. I’ve got a life sentence of heartache simply because I am a Black woman and nature has given me children. Despite that heartache, I’m still a fighter. I don't take my American citizenship lightly. I contribute. I work so hard. I'm a mother and I consider my role as a parent a contribution to this country – I am raising American leaders of tomorrow. I've given my life to this world. Can I ask for just 0.5% back? Do not dismiss my pain. I ask you to read this post to realize and accept that racism is real. Hello. My name is Amy Longa and this week I’m sharing my story on Sarah Wayne Callies’ Instagram as part of #SharetheMic.

Though English is my fourth language, America welcomed me in.

But I have to ask, how long am I going to fight for my basic human rights?

I’ve got a life sentence of heartache simply because I am a Black woman and nature has given me children.

Despite that heartache, I’m still a fighter. I don't take my American citizenship lightly. I contribute. I work so hard. I'm a mother and I consider my role as a parent a contribution to this country – I am raising American leaders of tomorrow. I've given my life to this world. Can I ask for just 0.5% back?

Do not dismiss my pain. I ask you to read this post to realize and accept that racism is real. Then commit to talk about it in your circles, I believe that we as a people cannot change unless we acknowledge the issue and talk openly about it. We must acknowledge that racial injustice is real and we must call out the racial justices in all of our institutions.

Thank you Sarah Wayne Callies for giving me this opportunity and to all of you who have followed along.
