tomorrow’s #sharethemicnow in her own words:

Hi everyone! My name is Amy Longa and I live in Garden City, Kansas. I am a mother of three boys and a girl. I am a former refugee originally from Uganda and I work for the International Rescue Committee (@RESCUEorg) helping other refugees begin new lives in the United States.
.
As a mother of Black children in America today, as a citizen of this beautiful country, and as a voice for those who are not able to come to light, I am proud to share my story on Sarah Wayne Callies’ Instagram as part of #ShareTheMic. Thank you, Sarah, for this opportunity and for being a part of the IRC’s family for so many years!
.
I have lived in the United States for 13 years and I have always been Black. But the death of George Floyd was a wake-up call for me. I was riding on this bus of being a former refugee, of focusing on my resilience and gratitude, with the attitude, “if you only work hard, you’ll find success.”. But the death of George Floyd was like a slap in the face. I realized what it meant to say, “I am a Black woman, a mother in America.”
.
I wept for two weeks. I kept imagining my sons could be Mr. Floyd. They are 13, 12 and 4 years old and for two full weeks, I imagined their deaths because of the color of their skin and cried. I cried because there is nothing I can do about them being Black. That is how deep the wound is.
.
I kept remembering scenarios from my past. My mother fled violence in Uganda and took me to the Sudan (now South Sudan) when I was just a baby. Then I was about 9 years old when I had to flee my village in Sudan. Gunshots rained over my head while I fled with my baby brother on my back. My childhood was once again ripped from me, I slept in the bush and walked long distances in our quest for safety. I had to share a small amount of food with 20 other kids. For years we had no access to our home because we were afraid we could be abducted by rebels.
.
I am thinking back to that and thinking that I was on the frontlines of a war and now, as a Black woman and as a mother, I am again on the frontlines of America.
.
That is why I am here, that is why I am sharing my story.
